When I first bought Cribbit, we started a 'ship's log'. At first this was a [fairly] straight forward account of what we were doing although the emphasis seemed to be on what went wrong, how many times I fell in, Sj got stung by a wasp [or wasps] or Tw discovered his inner pigeon. These sorts of events became traditional at our meetings and then Sj started coming at Easter before the wasp season and I gave up falling in and Tw became Dr.
When we meet up now, we try to take a standard photograph of tw and sj, based on the one taken on our first Cribbit trip together and at the end of it Sj writes the 'official' log. This is normally finished just before she leaves the US for her next visit. Sj logs are therefore always one year behind but its nice to read them just before she arrives as a reminder of what we did the last time she was with us.
This section shows the official pics supplemented with a few others to give a flavour of what we were doing when we met up either here or in the States and has links to Sj's accounts both in the text and as a clickable list below.
We picked Cribbit up at Hemel Hemstead and went to the Warner Brother's studio tour, The Making of Harry Potter. [Our tour written up in the theBlog] Carried on North to the Aylesbury Arm which was open this year. These were the first narrow locks we had done with Cribbit since 2000. We had forgotten just how nice the narrow canals are. Picked up Ivo and headed into Aylesbury. Returned and left the boat for the next set of boaters at The Grove Lock.
We picked Sj up from Heathrow airport, visited Rickmansworth and the Hanwell flight.
We moved Cribbit from her mooring at Poplar dock to her new one on the Paddington Arm near Yeading in north west London.
Then off to Hastings, dressed crazily for a little crazy golf
We rented a cottage at the end of lake Windermere
This marks the last occurence of something that some had hoped would also become an annual tradition. Cj demonstrates his ability in the kayak.
Sj demonstrates her ability to phone post to LJ.
Cj shows how to fall in without damaging his beer. Kindly passer-by asks if she can help. YES she can.."take hold of the beer"
We spent most of the holiday in Oxford as Tw was had university work to do.
Of course, Oxford means punting and here Sj shows her inate ability and I show my inate fear.
Unfortunately, it turned out that my inate ability was no better than Sj's and I tested the water depth at first hand, or should I say foot?
Sj has some traditional quirks of her own on these visits.
She has to buy sausage rolls.
She has to buy pic-N-mix sweets
She has to have rabbit pie.
She has to chase the latest Harry Potter.
as this was the last year before Sj started teaching and she was right in the middle of job search craziness in April.
Tw joins Sj at the Harry Potter conference in Florida
Hym boy comes home.
Cj went to the USA
Tw worked at Expo 2002 in Switzerland
I took two bottles of old lady's lavender water to give to Sj's mother. These were packaged in very stupid glass bottles that had a fancy and fragile bulb on the neck. During the flight one of these bottles broke and covered my clothes and everything with the evil smelling brew. The scent haunted us all holiday.
We dress up as for the Woody Allen film, 'Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask)' and go behind the falls.
We took Cribbit from her home moorings in Stratford, down the Grand Union and Oxford canals as far as Banbury. Sj painting dragons all over the boat the while.
At the airport waiting for Sj's flight and trying on mickey mouse hats.
In a way this is the first of them all. One of Nan's favourite photograph of the pair. The flower pot men, Tw with a screwdriver ever in his hand even at that age.
